Scariest Night So Far...

While the scariest night so far as being parents happened to Jason and I in the wee hours of Monday morning. (When we put McKenzie to bed around 8:30 Sunday night she was perfectly fine.) Around 1 am, I woke up to McKenzie crying. I listened for a minute and then when she did not stop I went in to see about her. When I walked into her room she did not sit up like she always does. Her eyes were closed very tightly and when I touched her, I realized she was burning up. I immediately picked her up in my arms and she was still crying (no tears) but not awake or responsive at all. I began to freak out. (I am usually the very calm one but I mean I was freaking out...big time!) I yelled for Jason and he came right away. I thought she was having a seizure. I laid her down on the changing table and began to take off her clothes that were drenched in sweat. I then took her temp and it was 103.5. Then I got even more nervous. I had no idea what was going on. She still was like asleep. We could not wake her up. I was clapping, yelling, trying everything and nothing was happening. I was ready to call 911 when Jason reminded me that I should call the nurse line at her pediatricians office first. So, I did. The nurse explained that I needed to get some Tylenol in her system immediately. So I rushed her downstairs where all the medicine is and laid her on the counter. Jason was getting dressed to go, where ever we needed to go. As the nurse is on the line I am trying to give MG this medicine but she can't even sit up. When I put the medicine in her mouth it all came right back out. So I tried again and some went down that time. The nurse said that she would call me back in an hour and check on her. By this time, McKenzie was still in a daze but not crying. Her eyes were opened now but she was not focused on anything or anyone. Not responding still to me and wanted nothing to drink or anything like that. She was just kind of limp. I rocked her until the nurse called me back. By this point her fever was down some and she was almost asleep. The nurse told me that she should be fine for the rest of the night but that I needed to make sure I checked on her. So I set my alarm and every 30 minutes I got up and checked on her. When I went in at 5:30 Monday morning to see about her, she sat right up and acted just fine. She wanted a drink and I gave her more Tylenol. I rocked her for a while and she went right back to sleep. First thing Monday morning I called her doctor and got an early appointment. She still had a fever yesterday morning but down to 102.1. I explained how McKenzie had acted to strange in the night. Her doctor explained to me that everything I told her was a prime case of a night terror. I have never known anyone to really have one of those but apparently they are real. She said that she was not responding to me because she was in a really sound asleep, even though at times her eyes were opened and she was thrashing around. MG's Dr. thinks it was brought on by such a high fever so quickly. Everything checked out fine though. The strep test was negative and her ears were fine. Some kind of virus she though. McKenzie's fever broke last night and today she is eating much better and playing. She is still very tired though and wants to rock. (Which I love!) So, if you have child that ever acts like that in the night...don't freak out like I did they will eventually go back to sleep and wake up right!

OMG Megan! I've heard about night terrors, but my kids have never had them. How scary! Glad McKenzie is okay.

Oh my goodness. I didn't know this happened. I am so glad she is okay, I can only imagine what was going on inside her precious little head. Please give McKenzie Grace a big kiss from me and tell her I love her so much!!!
